I have never watched a Fast & Furious film. Not one. I’ve seen the opening minutes of the first film, but the franchise isn’t really my thing. They’re now on Fast & Furious 6, following the massive success of the fifth instalment, which grossed $209 million at the US box office and over $626 million in 2011. Six movies – 12 years – that’s good going for a franchise that looked dead in the water when original stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker bailed on The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, which grossed just $63 million in 2006.
The pair returned, reinvigorated the franchise and the last instalment added Dwayne Johnson. Fast & Furious 6 looks likely to be more of the same, which I presume is a lot of action-fused driving and thumping music.
The just released poster for Fast & Furious 6 is sparse. It shows the back of Vin Diesel’s bald head, a car, blue skies and the open road. It looks more like an advertisement for aftershave than a summer blockbuster. They’re both products I suppose.
